Becoming debt free is for many nothing more than an elusive dream. The reality is, however, that becoming debt free is not so difficult if you have the discipline required to pay off your debts. Here are some tips on how to become debt free.
Budget
Drawing up a personal, household or business budget is essential so that you can see exactly where your money is coming from and going to. The budget will allow you to trim areas where you are spending needlessly, and you can then apply that money to any debts you may have.
Pay Highest to Lowest
If you have credit card or bank debt, then always apply any extra cash to paying down the highest interest rated debt first. Don’t miss any payments to your other debt sources; just try to pay down the highest interest rated debts first. This will save you money on interest payments once they’ve been eliminated.
Don’t Accrue More Debt
Use a prepaid credit card instead of opening up a new credit card. That way you can only spend as much money as you’ve put on the card, eliminating the potential for more debt. Save this card for emergencies; use cash whenever possible.
Consolidate
If you have several debt sources, such as bank loans and credit cards, talk to your bank about consolidating your loans. They may work with you to bundle all your debt together, allowing you to make just one loan payment.
Becoming debt free takes dedication and perseverance, but it can be done. Once you have become debt free, learn from your past experience and try not to get into debt again.
